Reading time is simple maths: number of words, divided by your reading speed. The average adult reads about 200 to 250 words per minute — slower for dense or technical text, faster for light fiction. A typical paperback page holds about 250 words, so a 200-page book is roughly 50,000 words, or about 3 hours 20 minutes at average speed. Speaking is roughly half as fast as silent reading: the same text read aloud takes about twice as long.
